I started to experiment with geometric shapes, experimenting putting shapes together as well as how to use them with my organic drawings. I’ve looked at using the shapes as spaces/boundaries to fill, creating patterns, using negative space to draw the shape with the organic forms, but this all seems so contrived and designed, not what my work is about.
I found the organic drawings and geometric shaped blended together more successfully when drawn with intuition, a feeling, it resembled nature, with how the organic forms grow and interacts with the structures and shapes. This led me to look at Li; the underlying reason and order of nature as reflected in its organic forms – Chinese philosophy, something I will go into this more detail in another post.
A large part of the organic feel came from flow, letting the work grown naturally. This also seemed to be more meditative. I did this by not letting the pen off the paper for certain amounts of time. I kept trying to hold it longer, from 5 to 10 to 20 minutes. It became a discipline like the discipline needed for meditation.
As I said before, I like to use shapes as boundaries and one idea is the use of boundaries as a save place which is something I am going to explore.
